HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 93
DESIGNATING MARCH 27, 2024 AS “MEDICAL MISDIAGNOSIS DAY”.
WHEREAS, the National Academy of Medicine defines a medical diagnostic error as “the failure to establish an accurate and timely explanation of the patient’s health problem(s) or to communicate that explanation to the patient(s); and
WHEREAS, medical diagnostic errors are an increasingly recognized threat to public health; and
WHEREAS, most adults will be misdiagnosed at least once in their lifetime; and
WHEREAS, each year, an estimated 391,000 Americans die from medical misdiagnosis while another 424,000 are permanently disabled; and
WHEREAS, for patients, medical misdiagnosis means over- or under-treatment, undue stress, additional pain, lost time seeing other healthcare providers, anxiety, and other complications; and
WHEREAS, medical misdiagnosis leads to unnecessary or detrimental treatment resulting in harm to patients’ physical or mental health as well as unnecessary financial loss; and
WHEREAS, due to medical misdiagnosis, approximately 400,000 hospitalized patients each year receive treatment that is physically harmful to them; and
WHEREAS, in the hospital setting, diagnostic error is responsible for up to 17% of adverse events; and
WHEREAS, the cost of medical misdiagnosis to the American healthcare system may be as high as $100 billion per year; and
WHEREAS, medical misdiagnosis places a heavy burden not just on patients but also on their families, loved ones, and caretakers; and
WHEREAS, Delaware has world-class healthcare providers but they are too often overburdened and under-resourced, and short-staffed facilities can lead to an increase in the number of medical misdiagnos es.
BE IT RESOLVED by the House of Representatives of the 152nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the Senate concurring therein, that March 27, 2024 is hereby designated as “ Medical Misdiagnosis Day,” and the State Legislature calls upon Delawareans to observe this day by learning about medical misdiagnosis and supporting individuals who have been medically misdiagnosed as well as their families, loved ones, and caretakers.
SYNOPSIS
This Concurrent Resolution designates March 27, 2024 as Medical Misdiagnosis Day in Delaware.
