An act to repeal and add Section 21351.3 of the Vehicle Code, relating to vehicles.

AB 3069, as introduced, Vince Fong. Local distance and speed signage.
Existing law authorizes local authorities to place and maintain signs that indicate speeds and distances both in common standards of measures and in measures of the metric system authorized by Congress.
This bill would repeal, beginning January 1, 2025, the authorization for local authorities to place signs that indicate speed in measures of the metric system. The bill would also make technical changes to these provisions.

The people of the State of California do enact as follows:


SECTION 1.

 Section 21351.3 of the Vehicle Code is repealed.
21351.3.

Local authorities in their respective jurisdictions may place and maintain, or cause to be placed and maintained, speed limit, speed advisory, and mileage signs, or suitable plates affixed to or near existing signs, which indicate speeds and distances both in common standards of measures, as specified in Section 12302 of the Business and Professions Code, and in measures of the metric system authorized by Congress.

SEC. 2.

 Section 21351.3 is added to the Vehicle Code, to read:

21351.3.
 (a) Local authorities in their respective jurisdictions may place and maintain, or cause to be placed and maintained, mileage signs or suitable plates affixed to or near existing signs that indicate distances both in United States customary units and in measures of the metric system authorized by Congress.
(b) (1) Local authorities in their respective jurisdictions may place and maintain, or cause to be placed and maintained, speed limit signs, speed advisory signs, or suitable plates affixed to or near existing signs that indicate speed in United States customary units.
(2) On and after January 1, 2025, local authorities in their respective jurisdictions may only maintain, or cause to be maintained, existing speed limit signs, existing speed advisory signs, or existing suitable plates affixed to or near signs that indicate speed in measures of the metric system authorized by Congress.
