Hello Michelle, I hope this email finds you well. We spoke over the over the phone a few months ago on voting rights legislation. I am writing to provide information on SB 308 and to ask that Rep. Ammons vote yes on third reading. SB 308 is related to a bill passed in 2015 (SB0023/P.A. 99-0419), which affirmed that DACA recipients are eligible for law licenses. SB 308 will affirm that DACA recipients are eligible for professional licenses through the Department of Financial and Professional Regulation. The bill also removes a subsection from the pharmacy practice act that requires applicants to submit proof of immigration status. The subsection is redundant and is not enforced by the Department since applicants must provide a social security number as proof of identity. The federal government issues DACA recipients a unique social security number and work authorization card. As with all employees, their employers have an independent responsibility to check work authorization. Under SB 308, DACA recipients will have to meet all requirements for a professional license, including education, testing, and background checks. The Department is neutral on the bill. I have attached a PDF fact sheet that includes over a dozen supporting organizations. I would be happy to answer any questions or provide additional information. Rep. Guzzardi might call the bill tomorrow (Friday) or early next week.
