A BILL to amend the Code of West Virginia, 1931, as amended, by adding thereto a new section, designated §29-1-15, relating to providing the Curator of Arts, Culture, and History with the authority to designate road as “Historic Route”; establishing rule-making authority; and mandatory collaboration with the Division of Highways to create and erect signs.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of West Virginia:


ARTICLE  1. Department of Arts, Culture and History.

§29-1-15. Naming Historic Routes.

(a) As a part of its mission to preserve the historical significance of sites throughout the state, the curator is authorized to undertake determinations as to whether any road that is a part of the United States Numbered Road System should be declared a “Historic Route”. The curator may propose rules for legislative approval in accordance with the provisions of §29A-3-1 et seq. of this code.

(b) Once a determination has been made to declare a road a “Historic Route”, the curator or his or her designee shall work collaboratively with the Division of Highways to create and erect signs to educate those travelling the road of its historical significance.

 

NOTE: The purpose of this bill is to provide the Curator of the Department of Arts, Culture and History with the authority to designate a road a “Historic Route”; establishing rule-making authority; and mandatory collaboration with Division of Highways to create and erect signs.
