A BILL to amend the Code of West Virginia, 1931, as amended, by adding thereto a new section, designated §17-4-2a, relating to providing the Commissioner of Highways with the authority to designate a road as an “Historic Route”; and establishing rule-making authority.

Be it enacted by the Legislature of West Virginia:


ARTICLE 4. STATE ROAD SYSTEM.

§17-4-2a. Naming historic routes.


(a) As a part of its mission to preserve the historical significance of sites throughout the state, the Commissioner of Highways is authorized to undertake determinations as to whether any road that is a part of the United States Numbered Road System should be declared an “Historic Route”. The commissioner may propose rules for legislative approval in accordance with the provisions of §29A-3-1 et seq. of this code.

(b) Once a determination has been made to declare a road an “Historic Route”, the commissioner or his or her designee shall create and erect signs to educate those travelling the road of its historical significance.

 

NOTE: The purpose of this bill is to provide the Commissioner of Highways with the authority to designate a road an “Historic Route”; establishing rule-making authority; and creating and erecting signs.
