HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 43

Requesting the Division of Highways name Bridge Number: 18-021/22-003.26 () (18A089), {38.83606,-81.67273) locally known as SYCAMORE BRIDGE #3 (SSWB), carrying CR 21/22 over SYCAMORE CREEK in Jackson county, the "U. S. Navy Quartermaster C. E. 'Red' Landfried Memorial Bridge".

Whereas, C.E. "Red" Landfried was born at home on Sycamore Creek Rd, September 24, 1932. His parents were Cleophas and Mabel Cunningham Landfried. His grandparents were James M. and Mary Belle Boyce Landfried. His great grandparents were Phillip and Sarah Ann Landfried who settled in Sycamore Road in 1848, when Phillip was only 19 yrs. old from Germany; and
Whereas, When "Red" was in Ripley High School he joined the naval reserve. He graduated from High School in 1951 and was called into active duty in February 1952. The United States was now engaged in the Korean War. While on active duty he served on the Destroyer the USS Holden DOE 819. They were assigned with three other ships to escort the aircraft carriers. These ships were to escort aircraft carriers and larger ships. They were to defend against powerful short­ range attackers, such as submarines. He was a Quartermaster Seaman while in active duty. His duties at sea in "real times" was to record in a logbook or ledger all the ships activities that were engaged in such as charting different positions when aircraft carriers were launching and recovering airplanes. Also, he maintained navigational charts. The log as written became a permanent record and was validated by the executive officer and Captain. The Korean War ended in 1953 and "Red" was released from active duty in Nov 1953. After his release from active duty, he served the remainder of his four-year enlistment as inactive. After his discharge he came back home to Ripley. He was married to Shirley Gorbey. They had four children, Rebecca, Phillip (deceased), Margaret and Paul.  Red worked at various jobs before being hired by the Federal Government at the Ripley Post Office in 1958. He started working as a postal clerk and worked his way up to the United States Postmaster. Retiring after 32 years of service. He owned and operated a farm, east of Ripley on Rt 33 for many years.  His wife Shirley died in 1990. He later married Audrey Shaffer Tolley. She had one daughter Teresa; and

Whereas, It is fitting that an enduring memorial be established to commemorate Quartermaster  C. E. ''Red'' Landfried and his contributions to our state and country; therefore, be it

Resolved by the Legislature of West Virginia:

That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to name Bridge Number: 18-021/22-003.26 () (18A089), {38.83606,-81.67273) locally known as SYCAMORE BRIDGE #3 (SSWB), carrying CR 21/22 over SYCAMORE CREEK in Jackson county, the "U. S. Navy Quartermaster C. E. 'Red' Landfried Memorial Bridge"; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Division of Highways is hereby requested to have made and be placed signs identifying the bridge as the "U. S. Navy Quartermaster C. E. 'Red' Landfried Memorial Bridge"; and, be it

Further Resolved, That the Clerk of the House forward a copy of this resolution to the Commissioner of the Division of Highways.
