Celebrating the life of Shirley Henry Finley.

WHEREAS, Shirley Henry Finley, a patriotic veteran and dedicated volunteer firefighter who served the residents of Smithfield for many years, died on May 15, 2018; and

WHEREAS, Shirley "Jack" Finley joined many of the other young men of his generation in service to the nation during World War II as a member of the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, after his honorable military service, Jack Finley was a loyal employee of Newport News Shipbuilding; and

WHEREAS, Jack Finley safeguarded the lives and property of community members with the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department, where he rose to the rank of captain and was named honorary chief in 2010; and

WHEREAS, in recognition of his exceptional service, Jack Finley received the inaugural Fireman of the Year award from the Smithfield Volunteer Fire Department; he was also active with the Virginia State Firefighters Association, serving as president of the organization in 1993–1994; and

WHEREAS, Jack Finley was the oldest living member of the Smithfield Veterans of Foreign Wars post, where he supported his fellow veterans as a post commander; and

WHEREAS, Jack Finley will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 69 years, Helen; his children, Patricia and Robert, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Shirley Henry Finley; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Shirley Henry Finley as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's respect for his memory.
