SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 535
Celebrating the life of Betty Gwaltney Schutte.

 

Agreed to by the Senate, May 29, 2018
 

WHEREAS, Betty Gwaltney Schutte of Clarke County, a respected community leader who helped preserve the history and heritage of the Commonwealth, died on April 23, 2018; and

WHEREAS, a native of Suffolk, Betty Schutte graduated from Mary Baldwin College and dedicated herself to historical preservation and restoration work in the Clarke County and Winchester areas; and

WHEREAS, Betty Schutte was active in the Winchester-Clarke Garden Club and the Garden Club of Virginia, from which she received the prestigious Massie Medal; she advocated for the creation of the Capitol Square Preservation Council in 1999; and

WHEREAS, as the Garden Club of Virginia's representative and the first chair of the Capitol Square Preservation Council, Betty Schutte led efforts to preserve the historic buildings, landscape, and artifacts of Capitol Square in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, Betty Schutte also served on the boards of the Powhatan School, Belle Grove Plantation, and Blandy Experimental Farm, and she enjoyed fellowship and worship with the community as a member of First Presbyterian Church; and

WHEREAS, for 55 years, Betty Schutte lived at Huntingdon, the family farm in Clarke County, where she relished every opportunity to entertain visitors and share love and laughter with family and friends; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by her daughter, Elizabeth, Betty Schutte will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her husband of 66 years, Charles; her sons, Charles and John, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Betty Gwaltney Schutte; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Betty Gwaltney Schutte as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's respect for her memory.
