SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 7
Celebrating the life of First Lieutenant Leevi K. Barnard.

WHEREAS, United States Army First Lieutenant Leevi K. Barnard, age 28 of Ararat, was killed in the line of duty on May 21, 2009, while valiantly serving his country in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom; and

WHEREAS, First Lieutenant Barnard attended Blue Ridge Elementary School and graduated from Patrick County High School in 1998; he was a member of the JROTC in high school and then worked and attended college in Charlotte, North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, a respected and professional soldier, First Lieutenant Barnard was a proud National Guardsman serving his third tour of duty in Iraq assigned to the 252nd Combined Arms Battalion based in Fayetteville, North Carolina; and

WHEREAS, while on patrol, First Lieutenant Barnard was killed when his unit was attacked by enemy forces using makeshift bombs; and

WHEREAS, First Lieutenant Barnard will be remembered as a private but serious person who liked to read history, The Art of War, and Plato; but he also enjoyed watching and playing sports, including playing fantasy football and participating on the church softball team; and

WHEREAS, a man of immense integrity, First Lieutenant Barnard will be fondly remembered by his mother, Pamela Jane Barnard Payne, his grandparents, Thomas and Daisy Barnard, and his many family, friends, and fellow soldiers; and

WHEREAS, First Lieutenant Barnard's death is a reminder of the hazards faced daily by the thousands of Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm's way; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, First Lieutenant Leevi K. Barnard; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of First Lieutenant Leevi K. Barnard as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Virginia.
