WHEREAS, Susan Lucinda Morgan Armstrong, a loving wife, mother, and grandmother who touched the lives of countless individuals in the Bassett community with her gracious and kind spirit, died on January 23, 2013; and WHEREAS, a native of Kansas City, Missouri, Susan Armstrong went to work for E. I. duPont de Nemours and Company during World War II at various locations in the United States, including Martinsville; and WHEREAS, Susan Armstrong married the love of her life, Bob, and the young couple made their home in Bassett, where they raised two sons in whom they took great pride; and WHEREAS, Susan Armstrong later worked part-time at Ferrum Veneer Corporation, which her husband managed, and took an active role in community affairs as a member of the Bassett Garden Club and Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church; and WHEREAS, as the Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church organist from 1945 until 1987, Susan Armstrong provided inspiring music to listeners at worship services and was honored for her decades of service at her retirement when she was named organist emeritus; and WHEREAS, a longtime member and president of the Bassett Garden Club, Susan Armstrong participated in the organization's annual bazaar to raise money to benefit community organizations and initiatives; and WHEREAS, Susan Armstrong was active in Democratic party politics, was a long-standing member of the Piedmont Democratic Women's Club, and was also famous in her own right after she appeared in a television commercial for her son, Ward Armstrong, during his 2011 House of Delegates' reelection campaign; and WHEREAS, Susan Armstrong brought to all of her endeavors a cheerful and kind presence that enriched the lives of those with whom she came in contact; and WHEREAS, predeceased by her husband, Bob, Susan Armstrong will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her children, Robert and Ward, and their families, including grandchildren, Robert, Courtney, and Whitney; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a beloved resident of Bassett, Susan Lucinda Morgan Armstrong; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Susan Lucinda Morgan Armstrong as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory. |
