WHEREAS, Marie Teresa Jennings Massie, a respected citizen and beloved community leader from Winchester, died on January 28, 2010; and WHEREAS, a native of Texas, Teresa Massie was born on July 10, 1923, to Mamie Marie Lindsey and Robert Harvey Jennings and enjoyed a rural farm life as a child; and WHEREAS, Teresa Massie graduated second in her class from high school and attended Arkansas Tech University, where she planned to study architecture; and WHEREAS, the advent of World War II changed Teresa Massie's course of study to drafting, and after the attack on Pearl Harbor, she aided in the war effort at home by working in an Army ordinance plant, where she drew weapons to scale for models and made blueprints for the machine shop; and WHEREAS, Teresa Massie met her husband, Joseph A. Massie, Jr., during the war at the naval base where her brother was stationed; they married on September 16, 1944; and WHEREAS, after World War II, the couple settled in Winchester and Teresa Massie dedicated her life to raising their two daughters, supporting her church, and serving the community of Winchester; and WHEREAS, Teresa Massie was an active member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Century Club of Winchester, and The Little Garden Club; she also served as chairman of the City of Winchester Welfare Board and was appointed to the Virginia Cultural Development Study Commission by Governor Mills Godwin; and WHEREAS, Teresa Massie will be greatly missed by her children, Lindsey and Elizabeth, and their families; and her numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated community leader and outstanding Virginian, Marie Teresa Jennings Massie; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Marie Teresa Jennings Massie as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory. |
