SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 240
Celebrating the life of Major General (USA Ret.) Alvin Bryant, M.D.

WHEREAS, Major General (USA Ret.) Alvin Bryant, M.D. of Hampton, a renowned soldier, doctor, and community servant, died on February 5, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a native of Florida, Alvin Bryant was born on February 27, 1937, to loving parents Claudia Mae Bryant and John Henry Ashley; and

WHEREAS, Alvin Bryant received a bachelor's degree from Florida A&M University as the top academic Army ROTC scholar and was commissioned as a 2nd lieutenant in the United States Army Infantry; he later earned a master's degree from Purdue University and a medical degree from Howard University; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated and hardworking soldier, Alvin Bryant proudly served his country during the Berlin Crisis, in the Vietnam War, and as part of Operation Desert Storm; he received the Legion of Merit and several meritorious service medals for his outstanding service before his retirement as a major general in 1994; and

WHEREAS, a well-known and respected physician and board-certified surgeon in Hampton, Dr. Bryant operated his own medical practice, where he worked side by side with his wife, Sandra, a nurse; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Bryant also served as a physician at Whitaker Memorial Hospital; acting administrator, Newport News General Hospital; and chief of trauma, Riverside Hospital; he was a founding member of the Peninsula Institute for Community Health (PICH) and was known for his coordination of free health screening clinics and lectures; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Bryant was a proud alumnus of Florida A&M University and was the founding president of the Hampton Roads alumni chapter; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Bryant was also a thirty-three degree Mason, life member of the NAACP, and member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Bryant generously gave of his time and talents to the community and Commonwealth, including as a member of the Chesapeake Bay Commission; Military Affairs Committee of the City of Hampton; and Fort Monroe, Federal Area Development Authority; he also served as past secretary of the City of Hampton Federal Area Development Authority; past rector of the Norfolk State University Board of Visitors, and founding president of the American Cancer Society Minority Task Force; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Bryant served as the former vice chairman of the Republican Party of Hampton and ran in 2003 for the Virginia House of Delegates and in 2008 for a Hampton City Council seat; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Bryant lived a long and full life marked by service to his family, alma mater, community, Commonwealth, and country; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Bryant will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and greatly missed by his wife, Sandra Bryant; their children, Anita, Beverly, Renee, Claudette, Patrice, Angela, Alvin II, Alvin III, Brandon, and Adrian; and his numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an admired soldier, and dedicated doctor and community leader, Major General (USA Ret.) Alvin Bryant, M.D.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Major General (USA Ret.) Alvin Bryant, M.D. as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for his memory.
