HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 547
Celebrating the life of the Honorable William Howard Hodges.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, April 17, 2018

WHEREAS, the Honorable William Howard Hodges, a former member of the General Assembly and a respected judge who served as one of the original members of the Court of Appeals of Virginia, died on September 14, 2017; and

WHEREAS, a native of Chesapeake, William Hodges graduated from Great Bridge High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Randolph-Macon College, where he was a member of Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity; and

WHEREAS, William Hodges honorably served his country as a member of the United States Coast Guard from 1951 to 1953, then earned his law degree from Washington and Lee University in 1956; he practiced law in Chesapeake and Norfolk with Kellam and Kellam, later renamed Kellam, Pickrell, Lawler, Hodges & Kellam; and

WHEREAS, desirous to be of further service to the Commonwealth, William Hodges ran for and was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1961; he represented the residents of the 49th District for two terms until he was elected to the Senate of Virginia, representing the residents of the 3rd District; and

WHEREAS, during his time as a state lawmaker, William Hodges introduced and supported numerous important pieces of legislation to benefit the residents of Chesapeake and all Virginians; and

WHEREAS, in 1972, William Hodges was appointed as a judge of the 1st Judicial Circuit of Virginia, where he presided with great fairness and wisdom until 1985, when he became one of the 10 original members of the newly formed Court of Appeals of Virginia; he retired from the court as a senior judge in 1989; and

WHEREAS, William Hodges served the community as a longtime member and board chair of the People's Bank of Chesapeake, the vice chair of the Crime Commission, a member of the Board of Trustees of Randolph-Macon College, and a trustee of Beazley Foundation, Inc.; and

WHEREAS, William Hodges served the Chesapeake community and the Commonwealth with the utmost integrity, dedication, and distinction; and

WHEREAS, William Hodges will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Betty; his daughters, Susan, Carol, and Betty, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues on both sides of the aisle; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of the Honorable William Howard Hodges; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Honorable William Howard Hodges as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for his memory.
