HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 509
Celebrating the life of Annie Giles.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, April 11, 2018

 

WHEREAS, Annie Giles, an icon of the Richmond community and a highly admired civic leader who dedicated her life to the service of others, died on March 23, 2018; and

WHEREAS, a native of Richmond, Annie Giles gained an appreciation for the importance of service, generosity, and faith from her parents, who founded Gospel Baptist Church in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, after relocating to the Whitcomb Court neighborhood in the 1960s, Annie Giles volunteered her time and wise leadership with several local boards, participated in numerous voter registration drives, helped alleviate hunger in the area, and developed community responses to crime; and

WHEREAS, among her many achievements, Annie Giles helped provide early childhood development to local families by founding the Parent-Tot Program, which was later replicated by six other housing communities in Richmond; and

WHEREAS, Annie Giles became known as the mother of Whitcomb Court, and her legacy lives on in the countless other people she inspired to become leaders in Whitcomb Court, Richmond, and beyond; and

WHEREAS, Annie Giles received many awards and accolades for her contributions to the community, including recognition from the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services and a special ceremony in 2017 to honor her life's work; and

WHEREAS, predeceased by her husband, Bruce, and one son, Norris, Annie Giles will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her children, Sylvia, Florence, George, and James, and their families, and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the House of Delegates hereby note with great sadness the loss of Annie Giles, a passionate advocate for the Whitcomb Court community in Richmond; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Annie Giles as an expression of the House of Delegates' respect for her memory.
