WHEREAS, in 2024, Tommy Slaughter retired from the Henry County Board of Supervisors after 16 years of outstanding contributions to public safety and economic development in Henry County; and
WHEREAS, Tommy Slaughter served the community for many years as a law-enforcement officer and retired as a member of the Martinsville Police Department; and
WHEREAS, desirous to be of further service, Tommy Slaughter ran for and was elected to the Henry County Board of Supervisors, representing the Reed Creek District, and first took office on January 1, 2008; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure in local government, Tommy Slaughter invigorated the economy in Henry County by supporting programs to construct shell buildings and grade lots, develop the Dick & Willie Passage Trail, and establish a partnership to develop workforce housing; and
WHEREAS, Tommy Slaughter helped recruit several new businesses to the area, including Press Glass, Crown Holdings, Eastman, Monogram Foods, and Drake Extrusions; and
WHEREAS, Tommy Slaughter oversaw the construction of Meadow View Elementary School and the Henry County Adult Detention Center; and
WHEREAS, Tommy Slaughter spearheaded efforts to rename seven bridges in Henry County after deceased law-enforcement officers to honor their service and sacrifice; and
WHEREAS, Tommy Slaughter's proudest achievement was instituting a professional emergency services department with paid staff and a fleet of ambulances to better serve and safeguard residents of Henry County; and
WHEREAS, Tommy Slaughter also represented Henry County on the West Piedmont Planning District Commission Board for 14 years; and
WHEREAS, after his well-earned retirement, Tommy Slaughter plans to seek new opportunities to continue serving the community and spend more time with his wife, Wanda, and their children and grandchildren; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Tommy Slaughter hereby be commended on the occasion of his retirement from the Henry County Board of Supervisors; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Tommy Slaughter as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for his legacy of service to the residents of Henry County.
