HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 897
Celebrating the life of the Honorable Julia Taylor Cannon.

WHEREAS, the Honorable Julia Taylor Cannon of Lincoln, a retired chief judge of the Loudoun General District Court, died on October 16, 2014; and

WHEREAS, a native of Lincoln, Julia Cannon earned a bachelor's degree from what was then known as Randolph-Macon Woman's College and a law degree from the University of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Julia Cannon followed in the footsteps of her parents to become a passionate advocate for civil rights and a champion for justice; she practiced law in the region for several years and served as a county attorney; and

WHEREAS, appointed as a judge of the Loudoun General District Court of the 20th Judicial District of Virginia in 1992, Julia Cannon presided over the court with great fairness and wisdom and was selected to serve as chief judge; and

WHEREAS, after her well-earned retirement in 2012, Julia Cannon continued to serve the community as a substitute judge for the Loudoun General District Court; and

WHEREAS, a woman of great integrity, Julia Cannon served Loudoun County and the Commonwealth with the utmost professionalism, dedication, and distinction; and

WHEREAS, Julia Cannon will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her husband, Thomas; daughters, Jessica and Johanna; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of the Honorable Julia Taylor Cannon, a retired chief judge of the Loudoun General District Court; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Honorable Julia Taylor Cannon as an expression of the General Assembly's respect for her memory.
