WHEREAS, constitutional equality for women and men continues to be a timely issue in the United States and worldwide, and a number of other nations have achieved constitutional equality for their women and men; and
WHEREAS, Congress is in a unique position to judge the tenor of the nation; to be aware of the political, social, and economic factors affecting the nation; and to be aware of the importance to the nation of the proposed amendment; and
WHEREAS, the deadline for the Equal Rights Amendment ratification is in the resolving clause and is not a part of the amendment proposed by Congress, thus allowing Congress to review and amend the ratification deadline; and
WHEREAS, Congress passed a time extension for the Equal Rights Amendment on October 20, 1978, thus demonstrating a willingness to amend the deadline; and
WHEREAS, Senate Joint Resolution 15 and House Joint Resolution 51 were introduced during the 114th Congress to remove the deadline for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly support legislation to remove the deadline for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. The General Assembly also supports legislation to pass a new deadline for ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates transmit a copy of this resolution to the members of the Virginia Congressional Delegation so that they may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia in this matter.
