HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 700 Commending Elk Hill.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, January 30, 2015 Agreed to by the Senate, February 5, 2015

WHEREAS, Elk Hill, a Goochland-based nonprofit organization, celebrates 45 years of providing educations and treatment services to children in 2015; and

WHEREAS, Elk Hill was founded by Mary Nixon and S. Buford Scott in 1970 as a home for boys who had to be removed from their homes; and

WHEREAS, the Scott family donated a small plantation home, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and land at Elk Hill Farm, which was once owned by Thomas Jefferson, in Goochland County to start the program; and

WHEREAS, between 1970 and 2015, Elk Hill has grown from one site serving a handful of boys to six sites throughout central Virginia serving 400 to 500 children and their families annually; and

WHEREAS, in 2014, Elk Hill maintained facilities in the Counties of Albemarle, Fluvanna, Goochland, and Henrico and the Cities of Charlottesville and Richmond; and

WHEREAS, Elk Hill offers specialized education, residential treatment, and community-based services to serve children, adolescents, and young adults between the ages of four and 21 who struggle with behavioral, emotional, and educational challenges; and

WHEREAS, Elk Hill provides three specialized educational facilities and four residential programs and offers summer camps at five locations throughout central Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Elk Hill's community-based programs facilitate mentoring, day treatment, outpatient therapy, family counseling, substance abuse counseling, and case management; and

WHEREAS, Elk Hill partners with more than 20 public and private schools to provide clinical services to students; and

WHEREAS, Elk Hill owes much of its ongoing success in improving the lives of children to the hard work of countless dedicated volunteers and many generous donations from individuals, foundations, and businesses; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Elk Hill on the occasion of its 45th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Elk Hill as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the organization's numerous contributions to the community and the Commonwealth.
