HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 589
Commending L. Bruce Holland.

WHEREAS, L. Bruce Holland of New Church in Accomack County has been inducted into Virginia Tech's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Hall of Fame honors those who exemplify career accomplishment and have given outstanding service to the college and university; and

WHEREAS, after graduating from Virginia Tech in 1970, L. Bruce Holland brought his acquired knowledge, technical acumen, and dedication back to his family farm in New Church; and

WHEREAS, L. Bruce Holland has proudly overseen the growth of his family farm through various circumstances over the past 40 years while also generously giving of his time and sharing his experience with various agricultural boards, serving in the community, and supporting his alma mater; and

WHEREAS, L. Bruce Holland has served as chairman of the Virginia Board of Agriculture and Consumer Services, treasurer and board chairman of the Virginia Soybean Association, board member of the Association of Virginia Potato and Vegetable Growers, and member of the Virginia Farm Bureau; and

WHEREAS, L. Bruce Holland is also treasurer of New Church Volunteer Fire and Rescue, president of the Pocomoke Ruritan Club, treasurer of the Broadwater Academy board, vice president of the Hartley Hall Nursing Home board, and an ordained elder of Beaver Dam Presbyterian Church; and

WHEREAS, a devoted alumnus, L. Bruce Holland served as a member of the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors from 2002 to 2009 and has been active in the Eastern Shore Chapter of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association; he received the Century Club Award of the Virginia Tech Alumni Association for his exemplary service; and

WHEREAS, desirous to share his love of agriculture with future generations, L. Bruce Holland annually hosts the Accomack Farm Tour Day, which brings more than 600 third-graders to the Holland family farm to learn about agriculture; and

WHEREAS, L. Bruce Holland has received numerous awards and accolades throughout a long and distinguished career, including the 2008 Distinguished Service Award from the Virginia Agribusiness Council and the 1998 and 2007 Meritorious Service Award from the Virginia Soybean Association; and

WHEREAS, L. Bruce Holland also received the 2003 Meritorious Service Award from the Virginia Potato and Vegetable Growers Association, the 2000 Life Member Award from the Virginia Soybean Association, and the 1988 Ruritan of the Year Award; and

WHEREAS, a worthy recipient for induction into the Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Hall of Fame, L. Bruce Holland exemplifies the devotion of Virginia farmers to their industry and commitment to their communities; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend L. Bruce Holland for his induction into the Virginia Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Hall of Fame; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to L. Bruce Holland as an expression of the General Assembly's respect and admiration for his lifelong contributions to his community, his alma mater, and the agricultural industry of the Commonwealth.
