HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 582
Commending Sentara Healthcare.

WHEREAS, Sentara Healthcare was honored to receive the 2010 Nicholas E. Davies Organizational Award of Excellence by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society; and

WHEREAS, the prestigious award recognizes excellence in the implementation and use of health information technology, specifically electronic health records, in healthcare organizations, private practices, public health entities, and community health organizations; and

WHEREAS, Sentara Healthcare developed an electronic medical records system, known as eCare, that allows for the secure sharing of patient information by hospitals, doctor's offices, and diagnostic centers; and

WHEREAS, the integrated system has led to improved clinical care for patients, reducing the average length of stay for patients, decreasing the time from medication order to administration, and preventing more than 100,000 potential medication errors; and

WHEREAS, the electronic medical records system allows for more efficient and effective patient care as well as decreases the chance for misunderstanding handwriting by allowing physicians to enter their own orders; and

WHEREAS, Sentara Healthcare has also received the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society Analytics Stage 7 Award for the highest level of electronic medical record adoption and listing in the Most Wired section of Hospitals & Health Networks magazine; and

WHEREAS, Sentara Healthcare, with approximately 95,000 inpatient admissions per year and 4.2 million outpatient visits per year, is the only integrated healthcare system in the country to receive all three distinctions for its information technology successes; and

WHEREAS, Sentara Healthcare's embrace of technology to enhance patient care makes it a worthy recipient of the 2010 Nicholas E. Davies Organizational Award of Excellence; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Sentara Healthcare on its receipt of the 2010 Nicholas E. Davies Organizational Award of Excellence by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Sentara Healthcare as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations and admiration for the organization's proactive approach to improving patient care.
