WHEREAS, the 2009 University of Virginia Cavaliers won the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) Division I Men's Soccer Championship title before thousands of fans, alumni, and spectators, defeating the University of Akron in a 3 - 2 penalty kick shootout; and WHEREAS, the Virginia Cavaliers finished the season with a 16-game unbeaten streak, and under the leadership of Soccer America National Coach of the Year George Gelnovatch finished with a 19 - 3 - 3 overall record; and WHEREAS, the victory marked the sixth overall men's soccer NCAA Championship and the 19th team national championship for the University of Virginia; and WHEREAS, the team set new school records for shutouts in a season (16), consecutive shutouts (11), and scoreless minutes (1,176:51); and WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the 2009 University of Virginia men's soccer team is a tribute to the perseverance of the players, the leadership of Head Coach George Gelnovatch and his staff, and the support of the students, faculty, alumni, and fans; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the University of Virginia men's soccer team on its 2009 NCAA Division I Men's Soccer National Championship; and, be it RESOLVED FURTHER, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate University of Virginia men's soccer Head Coach George Gelnovatch on being named 2009 National Coach of the Year; and, be it RESOLVED FINALLY, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach George Gelnovatch as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the championship performance of the University of Virginia men's soccer team. |
