HOUSE BILL NO. 1746 Offered January 14, 2015 Prefiled January 12, 2015 A BILL to amend the Code of Virginia by adding a section numbered 46.2-905.1, relating to operation of bicycles. ---------- Patron-- Ingram ---------- Committee Referral Pending ----------

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 46.2-905.1 as follows:

§46.2-905.1. Operation of bicycles on bicycle paths and trails, bicycle lanes, and shared-use paths; use of certain roadways by bicyclists prohibited.

Wherever a (i) bicycle path or trail designated by the Department of Conservation and Recreation, (ii) bicycle lane as defined in §46.2-100, or (iii) shared-use path as defined in §46.2-100 is available to bicyclists as an alternative to a roadway available for operation of motor vehicles, operation of bicycles shall be limited to such paths, trails, and lanes and operation of bicycles on roadways available for operation of motor vehicles shall be prohibited.
