CHAPTER 856
An Act to amend the Code of Virginia by adding a section numbered 53.1-116.1:02, relating to jailer issued identification for prisoners.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. That the Code of Virginia is amended by adding a section numbered 53.1-116.1:02 as follows:

§53.1-116.1:02. Jailer issued identification.

Prior to the release or discharge of any prisoner, if the prisoner does not already possess a government-issued identification card, the sheriff, jail superintendent, or other jail administrator may issue that prisoner a special identification card to be given to the prisoner upon his release. The sheriff, jail superintendent, or other jail administrator may establish a procedure for securing such identification through the Department of Motor Vehicles. All costs and fees associated with obtaining such special identification card shall be paid by the prisoner.
