Kay L. Wieland | ||
WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew | ||
to a close with the passing of United States Army Colonel (Ret.) | ||
Kay L. Wieland of Texarkana on May 26, 2017, at the age of 90; and | ||
WHEREAS, The son of Arthur and Clurrice Wieland, Kay | ||
Wieland was born in Wyoming on May 5, 1927, and graduated from | ||
Mitchell High School in Nebraska; he was drafted into the army in | ||
1945 and subsequently completed three years of service in | ||
Germany; after returning stateside, he earned a bachelor's | ||
degree from the University of Arizona; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Wieland began his career as a commissioned | ||
officer in the United States Army with the 82nd Airborne Division | ||
in Fort Bragg, North Carolina; over the years, he was stationed | ||
in Austria, Germany, Korea, and Vietnam, and he served as a | ||
platoon leader, company commander, and battalion commander | ||
before being named depot commander of the Red River Army Depot in | ||
Texarkana; his staff assignments included battalion operations | ||
officer, army branch assignment officer, command chief of staff, | ||
and executive officer to the assistant chief of staff for | ||
logistics with the United States Department of the Army; Colonel | ||
Wieland attended the United States Army Command and General Staff | ||
College and the United States Army War College, and he was a | ||
fellow of the Strategic Studies Institute; he also completed a | ||
master's degree in business administration at the University of | ||
Alabama; and | ||
WHEREAS, In addition to serving his country with | ||
distinction, Colonel Wieland contributed to his community as a | ||
member of the boards of the New Boston General Hospital and the | ||
Tri-State chapter of the American Red Cross and as director of | ||
the Atlanta Area Chamber of Commerce in Texas; he also taught | ||
management classes at East Texas State University and Texarkana | ||
College, and in his leisure hours, he loved spending time in the | ||
great outdoors, especially hunting and fly fishing; and | ||
WHEREAS, Above all else, Colonel Wieland was deeply | ||
devoted to his family; he shared six decades of marriage with his | ||
wife and high school sweetheart, Jacquelyn, before her passing, | ||
and he took immense pride in their daughter, Diana; and | ||
WHEREAS, Colonel Wieland possessed the courage and | ||
initiative that marked the finest members of his generation, and | ||
his exemplary service in behalf of his fellow citizens will | ||
forever inspire all who had the privilege to know him; now, | ||
therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory | ||
of Colonel Kay L. Wieland and extend heartfelt sympathy to his | ||
relatives and friends; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this day, it do | ||
so in memory of Colonel Kay L. Wieland. | ||
