WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to | ||
recognize Cypress Top Historic Park, which is being honored with | ||
an official Texas Historical Marker and a dedication ceremony on | ||
June 14, 2013; and | ||
WHEREAS, Located 26 miles northwest of Houston, within the | ||
Cypress Creek and Little Cypress Creek watersheds, the Cypress | ||
community began as a pre-republic settlement along Cypress Creek | ||
and has a long and storied past; and | ||
WHEREAS, The first documented Anglo settlers in the region | ||
were members of the Matthew Burnett family, who built their home | ||
sometime between 1831 and 1835; and | ||
WHEREAS, On April 16, 1836, Texas army commander Sam | ||
Houston and his troops stopped to stay overnight at the Burnett | ||
homestead; four days later, on April 21, 1836, Texas forces | ||
defeated the Mexican army in the Battle of San Jacinto, and | ||
Texas' independence was won; and | ||
WHEREAS, As early as 1840, the Cypress area was home to a | ||
post office; in the late 1840s, German immigrants began to | ||
arrive, and in 1856, the Houston and Texas Central Railroad laid | ||
its first 26-mile segment, which ended at what was then called | ||
the Cypress Top depot and gave rise to a flourishing business | ||
district; and | ||
WHEREAS, In 1897, Edward F. Juergen began buying up | ||
property around the depot; his descendants maintained ownership | ||
of the land and his business enterprises until 2005, when the | ||
property was donated to Harris County Precinct 3 to be preserved | ||
as a historic park; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend all those who | ||
have taken part in the preservation of Cypress Top Historic Park | ||
and extend best wishes to all attending the Texas Historical | ||
Marker dedication ceremony; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in | ||
honor of this occasion. | ||
