Allie Mae Young Singleton |
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|
commemorates the life of Allie Mae Young Singleton, who died in |
|
New Orleans on May 31, 2011, at the age of 76; and |
|
WHEREAS, Allie Mae "Shirley" Young Singleton, a native of |
|
Hazlehurst, Mississippi, was a retired hairdresser and the wife |
|
of former New Orleans city councilman Jim Singleton; she was a |
|
graduate of Parish High School in Hazlehurst and Katie's Beauty |
|
and Barber School; and |
|
WHEREAS, She moved to New Orleans in the 1950s with her new |
|
husband; she owned and operated the Parisian Beauty Den in |
|
Broadmoor for some 25 years; she relied on word of mouth to build |
|
a loyal customer base that sustained her business until she |
|
closed it for health reasons in the 1980s; and |
|
WHEREAS, She strongly supported her husband's political |
|
career over the course of his three decades of government |
|
service, which included a 24-year tenure on the New Orleans City |
|
Council, and she was a loving and dedicated mother to their |
|
children; and |
|
WHEREAS, A devout Christian, Mrs. Singleton was a member of |
|
Saint Mark Missionary Baptist Church for more than 55 years and |
|
served on the church's Thanksgiving committee; a devoted wife, |
|
mother, and grandmother, she leaves behind memories that will be |
|
treasured forever by her family and many friends; now, therefore, |
|
be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd |
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life |
|
of Allie Mae "Shirley" Young Singleton and extend sincere |
|
condolences to her bereaved family: her husband, Jim Singleton; |
|
her son, James M. Singleton, Jr.; her daughter, Jacquelin P. |
|
Singleton; her sisters, Vera Jean Young James and Rosie Louise |
|
Young James; and her two grandchildren; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|
memory of Allie Mae Singleton. |
