Micheline Trigaci Kay |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
|
citizens of Austin in mourning the loss of Micheline Trigaci Kay, |
|
who died February 16, 2011, at the age of 66; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born December 2, 1944, in Cairo, Egypt, Michele |
|
lived in London, Hong Kong, Saigon, San Francisco, Paris, Tel |
|
Aviv, New York, Dallas, and Austin; well-traveled and fiercely |
|
independent, she met her challenges throughout her life with |
|
courage, honesty, and humor; and |
|
WHEREAS, Michele's first language was French; she learned |
|
English at the age of 12 while living in London after her family |
|
was exiled from Egypt; as a teenager, she hitchhiked across India |
|
and Europe; at the age of 20, she married Keith Kay, and the |
|
couple had two children, Deborah and Warren; and |
|
WHEREAS, Michele led a remarkable life, personally and |
|
professionally; her professional life was grounded in journalism |
|
and included stints in politics, business, and community |
|
leadership; her career as an international journalist began at |
|
the age of 17, when she served as a reporter for the Hong Kong |
|
Standard; she later served as an editor and a columnist for the |
|
Dallas-Fort Worth Business Journal and was an editor for Texas |
|
Business Magazine; and |
|
WHEREAS, Michele moved to Austin in 1988 and held various |
|
posts with the Austin American-Statesman; her work included |
|
serving as a business editor, an editorial writer, a Washington |
|
correspondent, and a Texas Capitol reporter; she obtained her |
|
United States citizenship in 1997 and married her beloved Robert |
|
Schultz in January of 1999; and |
|
WHEREAS, In her late 50s, Michele attended Saint Edward's |
|
University, where she earned her bachelor's degree; she went on |
|
to earn her master's degree from the university in 2005 and then |
|
served as an assistant journalism professor and as a school |
|
newspaper adviser; she was beloved by her students and fellow |
|
faculty members and was respected for her many accomplishments; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Michele was also an exemplary community leader |
|
who served on The Nature Conservancy of Texas Advisory Council |
|
and on the board of directors for the Austin Playhouse; she was a |
|
member of the Open Forum Club, the Tuesday Club, and the Writers' |
|
League of Texas; and |
|
WHEREAS, Michele was a source of inspiration to others |
|
during the course of her illness, which she faced with |
|
determination and courage; a woman of uncommon strength and |
|
wisdom, she gave unselfishly of her time to her family and |
|
friends, and she will forever be remembered with deepest |
|
appreciation and affection by all who were privileged to share in |
|
her life; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 82nd |
|
Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
|
family of Micheline Trigaci Kay: her husband, Robert Schultz; |
|
her children, Deborah and Warren; her brother, Jean Pierre |
|
Trigaci; and her five grandchildren; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
the members of her family as an expression of deepest sympathy |
|
from the Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this |
|
day, it do so in memory of Michele Kay. |
