Keifer Marshall Jr. | ||
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the | ||
citizens of Temple in mourning the loss of Keifer Marshall Jr., | ||
who died May 28, 2017, at the age of 91; and | ||
WHEREAS, Keifer Marshall was an exemplary citizen and | ||
civic leader who was greatly admired and respected in the Temple | ||
community for his commitment to public service and for his many | ||
achievements as a businessman; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Marshall was a native of Temple and a 1942 | ||
graduate of Temple High School, where he was a standout athlete; | ||
he was attending The University of Texas on a football | ||
scholarship when he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in | ||
1944; and | ||
WHEREAS, He served the nation with distinction in the | ||
Pacific theater during World War II as a member of the 2nd | ||
Battalion, 9th Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division; he was a | ||
participant in the battle of Iwo Jima, one of the key engagements | ||
of the war; and | ||
WHEREAS, After his military service, he returned home and | ||
completed his education; he and his fiancée, Sammie, were married | ||
on January 30, 1948, and they enjoyed many years of marriage | ||
together; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Marshall had a long and successful career in | ||
the insurance industry, and he had a significant impact on his | ||
community as a public servant; he was a 10-year member of the | ||
Temple City Council and a two-term mayor; and | ||
WHEREAS, He also served as president of the Temple Chamber | ||
of Commerce, the Temple Industrial Foundation, and the State | ||
Highway 36 Association, and he was a founding member and | ||
president of the Temple Junior College Board of Regents; his many | ||
honors and accolades included the Drayton and Elizabeth McLane | ||
Community Achievement Award and recognition as a Distinguished | ||
Alumnus by the Temple Education Foundation; and | ||
WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he | ||
gave unselfishly to others, and his patriotism, his commitment to | ||
public service, and his enthusiasm for living each day to the | ||
fullest will not be forgotten; and | ||
WHEREAS, He was devoted to his family, and he leaves behind | ||
memories that will be cherished forever by all who were | ||
privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere | ||
condolences to the bereaved family of Keifer Marshall Jr.; and, | ||
be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for | ||
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas | ||
Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in | ||
memory of Keifer Marshall Jr. | ||
