Preston Murdoch Geren, Jr. |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
|
citizens of Fort Worth in mourning the loss of Preston Murdoch |
|
Geren, Jr., who died June 12, 2013, at the age of 89; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Preston Geren, Jr., was born December 16, 1923, in |
|
Fort Worth; a 1941 graduate of Arlington Heights High School, he |
|
attended Texas A&M University, where his studies were |
|
interrupted when World War II began; he was commissioned as an |
|
officer in the United States Army and served the nation with |
|
distinction in the European theater of operations, earning a |
|
Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and a Purple Heart; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, After the war, he resumed his education, |
|
attending Georgia Tech University and earning a degree in |
|
architecture and engineering; he then joined his father's firm, |
|
Preston M. Geren Architects and Engineers, and played a vital |
|
role in its growth and success; the company's work included |
|
numerous projects at colleges and universities across the state, |
|
and he was especially proud of its work on the Kimbell Art Museum |
|
and at Texas A&M University; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Geren was active in a wide variety of |
|
professional organizations; he served as president of the Texas |
|
Society of Architects, which honored him with its Llewellyn Pitts |
|
Award, and he was a Fellow of the American Institute of |
|
Architects; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, His civic involvement encompassed service on |
|
numerous boards of directors, and he was a founder and director |
|
of Overton Bank and Trust; he was elected to the Westover Hills |
|
City Council and served as president of 12th Man Foundation of |
|
Texas A&M University; he was a dedicated supporter of education |
|
and sponsored seven scholarships at Texas A&M University, which |
|
named him a Distinguished Alumnus; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A man of courage, strength, and compassion, he |
|
gave unselfishly to others, and his generous spirit and |
|
enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be |
|
forgotten; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and |
|
grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured |
|
forever by his family and countless friends; now, therefore, be |
|
it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd |
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere |
|
condolences to the bereaved family of Preston Murdoch Geren, Jr.; |
|
and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|
memory of Preston Murdoch Geren, Jr. |
