SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
|
|
WHEREAS, The Rotary Club of Quitman is celebrating its 75th |
|
anniversary in 2021, and this milestone provides a fitting |
|
opportunity to recognize the organization for its long history of |
|
service; and |
|
WHEREAS, On January 7, 1946, the Rotary Club of Quitman was |
|
chartered with the principle of "Service Above Self" and is one of |
|
the oldest nonprofit service organizations in the city; the first |
|
president of the club was Dr. Robert Lipscomb, a local dentist, and |
|
charter members included Virgil Shaw, T. C. Chaddick, C. O. |
|
Phillips, Lamar Shamburger, and W. T. Black; since its inception, |
|
the club has inspired its members, individuals, and other groups to |
|
provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards, |
|
and promote goodwill and peace in the world; and |
|
WHEREAS, The organization concentrates its efforts on |
|
serving the youth of the Quitman Independent School District and on |
|
contributing to many other worthy community initiatives; it has |
|
sponsored a Rotaract club for high school students, funded the |
|
first infrared camera for the city's fire department, and supported |
|
a number of youth programs, such as Rotary Youth Leadership |
|
Awakening; in addition, it has provided college scholarships to |
|
graduating seniors, including a scholarship that honors a local |
|
veteran of the Vietnam War who, after a distinguished military |
|
career, served as a Wood County judge and as a Rotarian; and |
|
WHEREAS, For 75 years, members of the Rotary Club of Quitman |
|
have performed works of lasting benefit to the local community and |
|
beyond, and they have set an outstanding example of civic |
|
engagement; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the 87th Legislature of the State of Texas, |
|
1st Called Session, hereby commemorate the 75th anniversary of the |
|
Rotary Club of Quitman and extend to all those associated with the |
|
organization sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the group as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives and Senate. |
