R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, An exemplary life devoted to family, faith, and |
|
public service came to an untimely end with the passing of Margaret |
|
Merle Roberts of Houston on January 4, 2017, at the age of 46; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born on March 21, 1970, to Charlie and Allegro |
|
Scott, the former Margaret Scott was the youngest of eight |
|
children; growing up in the Riverwood Estates community, she |
|
attended schools in the North Forest Independent School District |
|
and graduated in 1988 from M. B. Smiley High School, where she was a |
|
member of the Eagles marching band and a majorette; she continued |
|
her education at Texas Southern University and the University of |
|
Houston-Clear Lake; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Roberts was employed as a bank teller and banker |
|
before taking a job as a correctional officer with the Texas |
|
Department of Corrections; in April 1994, she began a career with |
|
the Houston Fire Department that would go on to span 22 years; she |
|
loved her work and the opportunity that it gave her to protect the |
|
public and serve alongside her fellow first responders, and she |
|
further contributed to her profession as an active member of the |
|
Houston Professional Fire Fighters Association IAFF Local No. 341 |
|
and the Houston Black Fire Fighters Association and as a teacher at |
|
the Houston Community College Robert Garner Firefighter Academy; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, This remarkable woman treasured her family above all |
|
else, taking great pride in her three children, Dominique, Daniel, |
|
and Crystal, as well as her stepdaughter, Jerlisa, her two |
|
grandsons, Julian and Kareem, and her stepgrandson, Reginald; she |
|
enjoyed a fulfilling relationship with Daniel Jerome Roberts II, |
|
whom she married in 1998; and |
|
WHEREAS, A successful entrepreneur, Ms. Roberts pursued a |
|
number of business ventures, including the trucking company that |
|
she and her husband owned, Like Magic Transportation; she also |
|
worked as a licensed real estate and loan officer, and she had a |
|
passion for Harley-Davidson motorcycles; a woman who drew on her |
|
faith for guidance and inspiration, she was a valued member of |
|
St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church in Humble; and |
|
WHEREAS, Although her death has brought great sorrow to her |
|
family and friends, Margaret Roberts touched many lives during her |
|
time on this earth, and all those who shared in the warmth of her |
|
affection will forever hold her close in their hearts; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Margaret Merle |
|
Roberts and extend deepest condolences to all those who mourn her |
|
passing; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Margaret |
|
Roberts. |
