R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Jere Langdon Jackson retired from the |
|
Nacogdoches County Historical Commission on December 31, 2012, |
|
concluding an outstanding tenure of more than four decades with |
|
that worthy organization; and |
|
WHEREAS, Appointed to the commission in 1972, Dr. Jackson was |
|
tapped to serve as chair of the group just four years later; he |
|
continued to lead the commission for over 35 years, until 2008, and |
|
during that time, he was instrumental in securing some 50 |
|
historical markers, which were installed at various sites around |
|
the county; and |
|
WHEREAS, A historian by profession, this esteemed Texan |
|
joined the faculty at Stephen F. Austin State University in 1970; he |
|
teaches local and public history, among other subjects, and has |
|
served as director of the East Texas Research Center and as the |
|
official university historian; early in his career, he received an |
|
appointment to the first City of Nacogdoches Zoning Board, and |
|
while working with that body, he authored historic overlay |
|
ordinances for the community; and |
|
WHEREAS, In 1976, Dr. Jackson was honored with the Governor's |
|
Special Service Award in the field of historic preservation; he has |
|
since received numerous other honors for his professional |
|
accomplishments, including designation as SFA Professor of the |
|
Year, Outstanding Teacher of the Year in Liberal Arts, and Regents |
|
Professor of History; and |
|
WHEREAS, Through his dedicated stewardship, Dr. Jere Jackson |
|
has played a vital role in preserving the rich heritage of |
|
Nacogdoches County for future generations of Texans, and he may |
|
indeed reflect with pride on all he has done to promote awareness of |
|
the people, institutions, and varied forces that have shaped the |
|
county that area residents call home today; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor Dr. Jere Langdon Jackson for his 43 years |
|
of service on the Nacogdoches County Historical Commission and |
|
extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and |
|
happiness; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Dr. Jackson as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
