  H.R. No. 6

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, Schwertner State Bank celebrated its 100th
anniversary on July 19, 2013, providing a fitting opportunity to
recognize this historic financial institution; and
WHEREAS, The bank's founder was Adolph Schwertner, one of a
family of Austrian immigrants who settled in Central Texas in 1877
and who donated the land for the town that now bears their name; in
order to accommodate the financial needs of the growing community
of farmers, Mr. Schwertner opened the doors of a new bank on October
  21, 1912; and
WHEREAS, The bank continued to serve its depositors through
good times and bad; when bank examiners came to check the
institution's books during the dark days of the Great Depression
and discovered that some local farmers might not be able to repay
their loans, Mr. Schwertner put up his own personal fortune as a
guarantee on their behalf; his trust in his customers was repaid,
and the bank did not lose a dime; and
WHEREAS, Schwertner State Bank has remained in the family
through the years, and in 1977, it was purchased by Adolph
Schwertner's grandson and current board chair Jim Schwertner; the
institution now boasts a second location in Jarrell, and under the
leadership of Mr. Schwertner and bank president Dale Hand, the
bank's assets have grown from $1.2 million to $42 million; and
WHEREAS, The bank's centennial celebration was attended by
600 people, including many longtime customers and Texas State
Banking Commissioner Charles Cooper, former FDIC chair Don Powell,
  Texas State Senator Charles Schwertner, and Governor Rick Perry;
  and
WHEREAS, The communities of Texas are strengthened by the
support and encouragement of locally owned and operated businesses,
and for 100 years, Schwertner State Bank has played an important
role in Williamson County; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate the 100th
anniversary of Schwertner State Bank and extend to the bank's
officers, staff, and customers sincere best wishes for continued
  success; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the bank as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
