R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, For nearly three decades, the African-American |
|
Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Texas has been an advocate for |
|
the African American attorneys of the Lone Star State; and |
|
WHEREAS, A recognized affiliate of the National Bar |
|
Association, the section was established in the 1990s to enhance |
|
the image of African Americans in the law by promoting the highest |
|
standards of competence and ethics and offering its members |
|
opportunities for professional development, networking, and |
|
community service; and |
|
WHEREAS, Each year, the section hosts the Texas |
|
African-American Lawyers Diversity Summit to increase awareness of |
|
the services and programs offered by the State Bar of Texas; in |
|
addition, the group offers a wide variety of activities to help |
|
members reach their professional and educational goals, serves as a |
|
voice on public issues affecting its membership and the community |
|
at large, and works to help its members find fulfillment in the |
|
practice of law; and |
|
WHEREAS, In order to promote the development of the next |
|
generation of African American lawyers, members of the section |
|
regularly mentor high school, college, and law school students |
|
across Texas; the group has also worked with the Lawyers' Committee |
|
for Civil Rights and the NAACP to combat voter suppression; and |
|
WHEREAS, The African-American Lawyers Section plays an |
|
important role in the lives and careers of the more than 5,400 |
|
African American attorneys in Texas by offering invaluable support, |
|
encouragement, and opportunities for fellowship; now, therefore, |
|
be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commend the African-American Lawyers Section of |
|
the State Bar of Texas for its contributions to the legal profession |
|
and extend to its members sincere best wishes for continued |
|
success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the African-American Lawyers Section as an expression |
|
of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
