WHEREAS, Memories of a life well lived remain to comfort the | ||
family and friends of Kate Nuber McVey of Kyle, who passed away on | ||
September 9, 2019, at the age of 72; and | ||
WHEREAS, Born on May 25, 1947, in Detroit, Michigan, Kate | ||
Nuber was the daughter of Carroll and Elizabeth Nuber Stamm; she | ||
moved with her family to Holland, Michigan, when she was 15 years | ||
old, and she graduated from Holland High School in 1965; as a | ||
student there, she developed an interest in journalism, reporting, | ||
and editing while working for the local newspaper; after high | ||
school, she enrolled at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, | ||
and not long thereafter wed her first husband, Jerry Lee Riemersma, | ||
in 1968; she later continued her studies at Michigan State | ||
University, St. Edward's University, and Austin Community College; | ||
and | ||
WHEREAS, During Mr. Riemersma's career in the United States | ||
Army, she made her home at various bases across the country and | ||
overseas in South Korea and Germany; she raised two sons, Jeffrey | ||
and Matthew, with Mr. Riemersma, and after the end of their | ||
marriage, she was fortunate to find love again with her second | ||
husband, Robert M. McVey, whom she married in 1990; her blended | ||
family with Mr. McVey included her stepson, Robert, and she was | ||
further blessed with two grandchildren, Joshua and Lia; and | ||
WHEREAS, During her time as a military wife, Ms. McVey worked | ||
for a number of base newspapers and served as an overseas reporter | ||
for the Austin American-Statesman and other publications; she | ||
became the managing editor of the Lake Travis View, and after moving | ||
to Zapata, she took over as copublisher and co-owner of the Zapata | ||
County News and the Hebbronville View; she found fulfillment in | ||
doing her part to bring aggressive reporting and exposés on local | ||
elections and government to her community; highlights of her career | ||
also included serving in communications and public information | ||
roles for such organizations as the Texas Association of Builders | ||
and the Texas Safety Association; and | ||
WHEREAS, Ms. McVey was honored with a host of professional | ||
awards for her accomplishments; outside of her work, she took | ||
particular pride in volunteering her time on the planning board for | ||
the new Zapata High School, where she helped secure a fully equipped | ||
theater for the drama department; and | ||
WHEREAS, Kate Nuber McVey lived a life that was rich in | ||
personal and professional achievements, and she will forever be | ||
remembered with deep admiration and affection; now, therefore, be | ||
it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 87th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Kate Nuber McVey and | ||
extend sincere sympathy to her loved ones; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of | ||
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Kate Nuber | ||
McVey. | ||
