WHEREAS, Under the leadership of Fire Chief John Phillips, | ||
members of the Morgan's Point Resort Volunteer Fire Department | ||
acted swiftly and decisively to contain a fast-moving brush fire | ||
near Lake Belton on July 27, 2017; and | ||
WHEREAS, Stoked by dry conditions in the area, the blaze | ||
started in the early evening and went on to consume around five | ||
acres in Morgan's Point Resort, where it threatened nearby homes | ||
and forced the evacuation of local residents; and | ||
WHEREAS, In its efforts to control the fire, the Morgan's | ||
Point Resort Volunteer Fire Department was assisted by agencies | ||
from throughout Bell County, including the Temple Police | ||
Department, Temple Fire & Rescue, the Bell County Sheriff's | ||
Department, and the Texas Department of Public Safety; firefighters | ||
worked with police to shut down roads and warn residents, and | ||
members of the Texas A&M Forest Service helped them in creating fire | ||
breaks to halt the spread of the flames; thanks in large part to the | ||
expert coordination of these first responders, the crisis was | ||
successfully resolved in a matter of hours with no injuries or | ||
property damage reported; and | ||
WHEREAS, The heroic response of Chief John Phillips and his | ||
crew saved lives and spared dozens of homes in the area from | ||
destruction, and their tireless dedication to public safety has set | ||
a high standard of excellence to which others in their profession | ||
may aspire; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Fire Chief John | ||
Phillips and the personnel of the Morgan's Point Resort Volunteer | ||
Fire Department for their role in controlling a brush fire on July | ||
27, 2017, and extend to them sincere best wishes for the future; | ||
and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for the department as an expression of high regard by the | ||
Texas House of Representatives. | ||
