WHEREAS, The year 2011 marks the 100th anniversary of the | ||
Eighth Court of Appeals in El Paso County; and | ||
WHEREAS, The court was created by the legislature in 1911, | ||
and on June 14 of that year Chief Justice W. M. Peticolas, Justice | ||
J. F. McKenzie, and Justice E. F. Higgins took their oaths of | ||
office; and | ||
WHEREAS, One of 14 courts of appeals districts in Texas, the | ||
Eighth Court of Appeals has appellate jurisdiction of both civil | ||
and criminal cases appealed from district and county courts in 17 | ||
counties, including Andrews, Brewster, Crane, Crockett, Culberson, | ||
El Paso, Hudspeth, Jeff Davis, Loving, Pecos, Presidio, Reagan, | ||
Reeves, Terrell, Upton, Ward, and Winkler; and | ||
WHEREAS, The Eighth Court of Appeals plays a vital role in | ||
West Texas and in the justice system of the Lone Star State as a | ||
whole, and it is indeed fitting to recognize the institution on the | ||
occasion of its centennial year; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas | ||
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commemorate the 100th | ||
anniversary of the Eighth Court of Appeals and pay tribute to its | ||
notable history. | ||
