WHEREAS, The Honorable Hilda Gloria Tagle retired as senior | ||
judge of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas | ||
in 2021, drawing to a close a pioneering career in the law that | ||
spanned more than four decades; and | ||
WHEREAS, The daughter of Manuel and Dolores Cipriano Tagle, | ||
Hilda Tagle was born in Corpus Christi in 1946 and grew up in | ||
Robstown; she earned her associate's degree from Del Mar College in | ||
1967, her bachelor's degree from East Texas State University in | ||
1969, and her master's degree in library science from North Texas | ||
State University in 1971; and | ||
WHEREAS, While working as a librarian at Strake Jesuit | ||
College Preparatory School in Houston, Judge Tagle enrolled in The | ||
University of Texas School of Law, and she graduated in 1977; she | ||
began her legal career as an assistant city attorney in Corpus | ||
Christi and as an assistant county attorney in Nueces County, and in | ||
1980 she was recruited by the Nueces County district attorney to | ||
prosecute felonies; she then entered private practice for a time, | ||
while also teaching at Del Mar College; and | ||
WHEREAS, In 1985, Judge Tagle was appointed to Nueces County | ||
Court at Law No. 3, making her the first Hispanic woman to serve as | ||
a judge in Nueces County, the first Hispanic woman to serve on a | ||
county court at law in Texas, and the second Hispanic woman to serve | ||
as judge of a court of record in the history of Texas; she was | ||
elected judge of the 148th District Court in Corpus Christi in 1994, | ||
and in 1997 she was nominated by President Bill Clinton to the U.S. | ||
District Court; confirmed by the U.S. Senate the following year, | ||
she became the first Hispanic woman to serve as a U.S. District | ||
Court judge in Texas, and on December 31, 2012, she became the | ||
court's senior judge; and | ||
WHEREAS, Judge Tagle's dedication, expertise, and commitment | ||
to the law have greatly benefited the citizens of Texas and earned | ||
her the respect and admiration of her fellow jurists, and she may | ||
indeed reflect with pride on a career well spent as she embarks on | ||
the next exciting chapter of her life; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby congratulate Hilda Gloria Tagle on her | ||
retirement as senior judge of the U.S. District Court for the | ||
Southern District of Texas and extend to her sincere best wishes for | ||
the future; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Judge Tagle as an expression of high regard by the | ||
Texas House of Representatives. | ||
