R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Keifer Marshall of Temple distinguished himself |
|
through his courageous service as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps |
|
during World War II, and he is indeed deserving of special |
|
recognition for his valiant contributions; and |
|
WHEREAS, A native of Temple, Robert William Keifer Marshall |
|
graduated from high school in 1942, and in January 1943 he accepted |
|
a football scholarship to The University of Texas at Austin; as a |
|
freshman during the Longhorns' appearance in the 1944 Cotton Bowl, |
|
he played both offense and defense and was on the field for the |
|
entire 60 minutes; following his 18th birthday, he interrupted his |
|
education in order to serve his nation and enlist in the marines; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, After training in San Diego and at Camp Pendleton as |
|
a rifleman, Private Marshall shipped out to Guam, where he helped |
|
clear the island of enemy soldiers in the aftermath of the Second |
|
Battle of Guam; sent next to Iwo Jima, he went ashore five days |
|
after the initial invasion as a member of Fox Company, 2nd |
|
Battalion, 9th Marines; he subsequently helped take the north end |
|
of the island, which was the site of much savage, hand-to-hand |
|
fighting; for 36 hours, his unit was cut off from supplies and |
|
reinforcements; altogether, he spent 45 days on Iwo Jima, during |
|
which time many of the members of his unit were killed or wounded; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, After the war, Mr. Marshall completed his education |
|
in 1950 and returned to Temple, where he pursued a career in the |
|
insurance business; he also became a leading member of his |
|
community, serving 10 years on the city council and four years as |
|
mayor; in addition, he has served as a member of the board of the |
|
Temple Public Library and as president of the Temple Chamber of |
|
Commerce, and he was instrumental in the establishment of the |
|
William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home; and |
|
WHEREAS, Keifer Marshall stepped forward in a time of war to |
|
help defend his country, and it is a pleasure to commend him for the |
|
tremendous bravery and selflessness he demonstrated in behalf of |
|
his fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor Keifer Marshall for his service in the |
|
U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and extend to him sincere best |
|
wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. Marshall as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
