R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Rosa Walker of Austin is being inducted into the |
|
Texas AFL-CIO Hall of Fame on June 10, 2011; and |
|
WHEREAS, A leading figure in the state's labor movement, Ms. |
|
Walker served the Texas AFL-CIO as director of community |
|
services/volunteers for 39 years before her retirement in 2003; she |
|
was instrumental in the recruitment of many capable women for the |
|
union cause through the years, and she coordinated union disaster |
|
relief operations, voter registration drives, and get-out-the-vote |
|
efforts; in addition, she played a key role in advocacy activities |
|
for a number of issues and managed preparations for special labor |
|
events; and |
|
WHEREAS, Ms. Walker was born in Hemphill and graduated from |
|
Pineland High School; after beginning her career with Southwestern |
|
Bell, she joined the Communication Workers of America and went on to |
|
serve as a commercial job steward and member of the CWA executive |
|
board; she later dedicated herself to the labor movement on a |
|
full-time basis, becoming an organizer for the Industrial Union |
|
Department of the AFL-CIO before joining the staff of the Harris |
|
County AFL-CIO; and |
|
WHEREAS, In 1965, Ms. Walker began her long tenure with the |
|
Texas AFL-CIO; she also served as vice president of the Texas |
|
Coalition of Labor Union Women and as a member of the Democratic |
|
National Committee and the Texas Commission on Judicial Conduct, |
|
and she was a founder of the Texas Consumer Association; a member of |
|
the Texas Women's Hall of Fame, she is the recipient of numerous |
|
other accolades as well; and |
|
WHEREAS, Rosa Walker has made a positive difference in the |
|
lives of countless Texas workers through her tireless commitment to |
|
the labor movement, and this prestigious honor is a testament to the |
|
respect and admiration she has earned through her noteworthy |
|
contributions; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 82nd Texas |
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Rosa Walker on |
|
her induction into the Texas AFL-CIO Hall of Fame and extend to her |
|
sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Ms. Walker as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
