R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with joyful times and |
|
meaningful accomplishments remain to comfort the family and friends |
|
of Barbara Ruud of Austin, who passed away on April 7, 2016, at the |
|
age of 94; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born on April 25, 1921, the former Barbara Dailey |
|
enjoyed an idyllic childhood in her hometown of Mankato, Minnesota; |
|
she attended Macalester College in St. Paul before transferring to |
|
the University of Minnesota, where she met her future husband, |
|
Millard H. Ruud; the couple married on August 28, 1943, and they |
|
went on to share nearly 54 years together; while Mr. Ruud served |
|
overseas in the U.S. Army, Mrs. Ruud completed her law degree at |
|
UMN, and in 1944, she became the first woman to be hired as a claims |
|
adjuster for State Farm Insurance; and |
|
WHEREAS, After the war, the couple moved first to Lawrence, |
|
Kansas, and then to Texas, when Mr. Ruud accepted a teaching |
|
position at The University of Texas School of Law in 1948; while in |
|
Austin, they welcomed the birth of their three sons, Stephen, |
|
Christopher, and Michael; in addition to raising her family, |
|
Mrs. Ruud found time to participate in civic organizations, and she |
|
served as a member of the Texas Bar Association's Administrative |
|
Law Committee, as president of the Austin League of Women Voters, |
|
and as president of the local chapter of the PEO Sisterhood; and |
|
WHEREAS, In the 1960s and '70s, Mrs. Ruud worked as legal |
|
counsel to Governors Preston Smith and Dolph Briscoe and later as an |
|
assistant attorney for Attorney Generals Mark White and Jim Mattox; |
|
she and Mr. Ruud subsequently relocated to Washington, D.C., where |
|
she enjoyed serving as chief legal counsel for U.S. Congressman |
|
Jake Pickle; after returning to Austin in 1988, she remained active |
|
with her civic endeavors, and she and her husband traveled the world |
|
together before his passing in 1997; the later years of her life |
|
were blessed with the affection of her three grandchildren and two |
|
great-grandchildren; and |
|
WHEREAS, Deeply devoted to her loved ones and to the causes |
|
she held dear, Barbara Ruud touched countless lives during her |
|
journey on this earth, and she will always be remembered with great |
|
admiration and affection; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Barbara Ruud and |
|
extend sincere sympathy to all those who mourn her passing; and, be |
|
it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Barbara |
|
Ruud. |
