WHEREAS, Dr. Sylvia Trent-Adams was named the seventh | ||
president of the University of North Texas Health Science Center at | ||
Fort Worth on September 12, 2022, and with that appointment, she | ||
became the first Black woman to lead a health science center in the | ||
State of Texas; and | ||
WHEREAS, A trailblazer throughout her career, | ||
Dr. Trent-Adams began her work in public health when she joined the | ||
United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps in 1992; she | ||
went on to become the first Black woman to serve the organization as | ||
deputy surgeon general, and she later retired at the rank of rear | ||
admiral upper half in 2020; and | ||
WHEREAS, As the U.S. deputy surgeon general from 2015 to | ||
2018, she was a trusted advisor to the surgeon general on a variety | ||
of critical issues, including federal efforts to combat the opioid | ||
crisis; and | ||
WHEREAS, Dr. Trent-Adams received her bachelor's degree in | ||
nursing from Hampton University and both her master's degree in | ||
nursing and health policy and her doctorate in public policy from | ||
the University of Maryland; through her outstanding work as a | ||
nurse-researcher, she earned the Florence Nightingale Medal from | ||
the International Committee of the Red Cross, the highest | ||
international honor bestowed upon a nursing professional; and | ||
WHEREAS, Dr. Sylvia Trent-Adams has demonstrated a | ||
longstanding commitment to research, education, patient care, and | ||
public service, and she may indeed reflect with pride on all that | ||
she has achieved as she takes on the challenges of her new role; | ||
now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas | ||
Legislature hereby commend Dr. Sylvia Trent-Adams on her | ||
appointment as president of the University of North Texas Health | ||
Science Center at Fort Worth and extend to her sincere best wishes | ||
for a successful and productive tenure; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
prepared for Dr. Trent-Adams as an expression of high regard by the | ||
Texas House of Representatives. | ||
