R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, La Sociedad Mutualista de Cuauhtémoc has |
|
|
demonstrated a steadfast commitment to supporting Mexican American |
|
|
residents of San Marcos; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In response to a lack of civic, business, and |
|
|
educational resources, Mexican Americans in San Marcos began |
|
|
establishing mutual aid societies in the early 1900s; in 1942, the |
|
|
general consul of Mexico suggested the formation of an honorary |
|
|
commission to represent the area's Mexican American residents, |
|
|
which soon led to the creation of La Sociedad Mutualista de |
|
|
Cuauhtémoc; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Since its founding, the organization has worked to |
|
|
promote and preserve the heritage and cultural identity of the |
|
|
Mexican American community and to provide necessary services to its |
|
|
members; its civic programs and initiatives have included free |
|
|
summer day camps, scholarships for graduating high school seniors, |
|
|
financial assistance for funeral expenses, and even medical advice; |
|
|
moreover, the organization developed El Parque Cuauhtémoc in the |
|
|
Victory Gardens subdivision, and the park's Cuauhtémoc Hall has |
|
|
become a popular venue for community events and cultural |
|
|
celebrations such as Cinco de Mayo, Dies y Seis de Septiembre, and |
|
|
Día de la Raza; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, True to its mission, La Sociedad Mutualista de |
|
|
Cuauhtémoc has served as an essential resource for the Mexican |
|
|
American community in San Marcos and beyond, and the organization |
|
|
is indeed deserving of special recognition for its contributions; |
|
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas |
|
|
Legislature, 4th Called Session, hereby honor La Sociedad |
|
|
Mutualista de Cuauhtémoc and extend to all those associated with |
|
|
the organization sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it |
|
|
further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for La Sociedad Mutualista de Cuauhtémoc as an expression |
|
|
of high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
