R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Texas State University--San Marcos officially |
|
adopted its current name in 2003, marking a new era for this highly |
|
respected educational institution; and |
|
WHEREAS, The university was called Southwest Texas State |
|
Normal School when it opened its doors in 1903; the inaugural group |
|
of 303 students attended class at the only structure on campus, the |
|
red-roofed Old Main building, which Texas State still uses today; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Throughout its 110-year history, the school's name |
|
has changed as the scope of its mission has broadened; it was |
|
renamed Southwest Texas State Normal College in 1918, after it was |
|
approved to begin granting degrees, and by the time the Texas |
|
Legislature changed the name to Southwest Texas State University in |
|
1969, thousands of students were enrolled in its undergraduate and |
|
graduate programs; and |
|
WHEREAS, Today, Texas State continues its tradition of |
|
academic excellence, offering a diverse student body of more than |
|
34,000 a vast array of degree programs; the school takes |
|
justifiable pride in the Meadows Center for Water and the |
|
Environment, where students can study aquatic ecosystems, and in |
|
its nationally recognized geography department, which offers a |
|
master's of applied geography, the first of its kind in the country, |
|
as well as in its programs in criminal justice, music, and creative |
|
writing, among others; and |
|
WHEREAS, Committed to providing an exceptional education, |
|
Texas State University--San Marcos helps students build a brighter |
|
future for themselves and their families, and in so doing, the |
|
institution is making an important contribution to the vitality of |
|
the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the 10th anniversary of the naming |
|
of Texas State University--San Marcos and extend to its students, |
|
faculty members, and staff sincere best wishes for continued |
|
success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the university as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
