relating to instruction in accessible design in the curriculum for | ||
an architecture degree program offered by a public institution of | ||
higher education. | ||
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: | ||
SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 51, Education Code, is | ||
amended by adding Section 51.9721 to read as follows: | ||
Sec. 51.9721. ARCHITECTURE DEGREE PROGRAM INSTRUCTION IN | ||
ACCESSIBLE DESIGN. (a) In this section, "institution of higher | ||
education" has the meaning assigned by Section 61.003. | ||
(b) The governing board of each institution of higher | ||
education that offers an undergraduate or graduate degree program | ||
in architecture shall include in the required curriculum for that | ||
degree program instruction regarding the requirements of the 2010 | ||
Americans with Disabilities Act Standards for Accessible Design or | ||
any successor standards that address accessible design of buildings | ||
or other facilities and are promulgated under the Americans with | ||
Disabilities Act of 1990 (42 U.S.C. Section 12101 et seq.). | ||
SECTION 2. The change in law made by this Act applies only | ||
to an undergraduate or graduate degree program in architecture | ||
offered by a public institution of higher education during an | ||
academic period that begins on or after the effective date of this | ||
Act. | ||
SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives | ||
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as | ||
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this | ||
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this | ||
Act takes effect September 1, 2017. |
