A house RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES UPON THE PASSING OF Janie L. "Dale" Smalls OF RICHLAND COUNTY AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER LARGE AND LOVING FAMILY AND HER MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives were saddened to learn of the death of Janie L. "Dale" Smalls at the age of ninety-six on January 26, 2023; and

Whereas, born in Springfield on February 7, 1926, she was the daughter of the late Lawton and Amy Bonnett and was educated in the public schools of Springfield and Blackville; and

Whereas, as a child, Mrs. Smalls attended Samaria Baptist Church, and after moving to Columbia as an adult, she joined St. James African Methodist Episcopal Church in the Wheeler Hill community. After moving from the Wheeler Hill community, she joined Forest Drive Baptist Church, now NorthStar Christian Center, where she was a dedicated and faithful member until her passing; and

Whereas, together with her beloved husband, the late Herbert Smalls, Sr., she reared twelve fine children: Janie Mae Smalls, Ernest Smalls, Melvin Smalls, Gary Smalls, Brenda Bradley, Darrin Smalls, the late Herbert Smalls, Jr., the late Darlene Bolton, the late Robert Smalls, the late Shirley Karriem, the late Sarah Anderson, and the late Lester Smalls; and

Whereas, Mrs. Smalls' children blessed her with the affection of thirty-seven devoted grandchildren. She was blessed to see the continuation of her loving family legacy in thirty-nine great-grandchildren and eleven great-great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, she loved to cook for family and friends. She enjoyed quilting and tending to plants and the yard, and she was responsible for causing all the children in the family to love fatback; and

Whereas, the South Carolina House of Representatives is grateful for the life and legacy of Dale Smalls and for the example of hospitality and kindness she set for all who knew her. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the passing of Janie L. "Dale" Smalls of Richland County and extend their deepest sympathy to her large and loving family and her many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the family of Janie L. "Dale" Smalls.
