A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-53-1990 SO AS TO REQUIRE EVERY PUBLIC MIDDLE SCHOOL AND PUBLIC HIGH SCHOOL OF THIS STATE THAT IS LOCATED WITHIN A SCHOOL DISTRICT THAT IS LOCATED WITHIN A COUNTY THAT HAS A PORT TO OFFER AT LEAST FIVE CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY COURSES TO THEIR RESPECTIVE STUDENTS FOR ELECTIVE CREDIT.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    Article 21, Chapter 53, Title 59 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 59-53-1990.    (A)    Notwithstanding another provision of law and beginning with the 2011-2012 school year, every public middle school and public high school of this State located in a school district that is located within a county that has a port as defined in Section 54-17-20 shall offer at least five career and technology courses to their respective students for elective credit.

(B)    As used in this section, 'career and technology course' means a course that provides practical experience in a particular occupational field."

SECTION    2.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
