A RESOLUTION

Designating November 2010 as "Hydrocephalus Awareness Month" in

2

Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Hydrocephalus is a serious neurological condition,

4

characterized by the abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluids in

5

the ventricles of the brain; and

6

WHEREAS, There is no known cure for hydrocephalus, which

7

affects an estimated one million Americans; and

8

WHEREAS, Hydrocephalus is one of the most common birth

9

defects, as one to two out of every 1,000 babies are born with

10

hydrocephalus; and

11

WHEREAS, Another 6,000 children annually develop

12

hydrocephalus during the first two years of life; and

13

WHEREAS, More than 375,000 older Americans have

14

hydrocephalus, which is often undetected or misdiagnosed as

15

dementia, Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease; and

16

WHEREAS, With appropriate diagnosis and treatment, people who

17

have hydrocephalus are able to live full and productive lives;

WHEREAS, The standard treatment for hydrocephalus was

3

developed in 1952 and carries multiple risks, including shunt

4

failure, infection and over-drainage; and

5

WHEREAS, Further research into the epidemiology,

6

pathophysiology, disease burden and improved treatment of

7

hydrocephalus is needed; and

8

WHEREAS, There are fewer than ten centers in the United

9

States specializing in the treatment of adults with normal-

10

pressure hydrocephalus; and

11

WHEREAS, Each year, the people of the United States spend

12

more than $1 billion to treat hydrocephalus; and

13

WHEREAS, The month of September 2010 is recognized nationally

14

as "Hydrocephalus Awareness Month"; and

15

WHEREAS, Thousands of Commonwealth residents suffer from the

16

effects of hydrocephalus and are required to obtain specialized

17

treatment to alleviate the symptoms of this condition; and

18

WHEREAS, This Commonwealth is home to several renowned

19

medical institutions and other organizations working to increase

20

public awareness and develop new treatments that will improve

21

the lives of those who are afflicted with this condition;

22

therefore be it

23

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate November 2010 as

24

"Hydrocephalus Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania and call upon

25

all residents of this Commonwealth to raise awareness of

26

hydrocephalus by participating in appropriate activities.
