A RESOLUTION

Celebrating 2010 as the 75th anniversary of the National Labor

2

Relations Act and the National Labor Relations Board and the

3

role that both have played in the protection of freedoms

4

provided to workers.

5

WHEREAS, On July 5, 1935, President Franklin Roosevelt signed

6

the National Labor Relations Act into law; and

7

WHEREAS, The National Labor Relations Board was established

8

with passage of the act to protect employees' rights to organize

9

and bargain collectively with their employer and to prevent or

10

remedy unfair labor practices; and

11

WHEREAS, For 75 years the National Labor Relations Board has

12

succeeded in resolving labor disputes peacefully by providing an

13

orderly, regulatory process that allows labor, management and

14

employees to settle their differences; and

15

WHEREAS, Today the National Labor Relations Board, an

16

independent Federal agency, has 5 members and 51 offices across

17

the country, including offices in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.

The board and its regional employees handle approximately 25,000

unfair labor practice charges each year; and

2

WHEREAS, The National Labor Relations Board allows a worker

3

to file charges if he or she believes rights have been violated

4

or an employer or a union has engaged in unlawful activity; and

5

WHEREAS, Due to settlements over the last ten years alone,

6

the board has distributed nearly $430 million to American

7

workers in back pay for earnings lost as a result of unfair

8

labor practices committed by employers and unions. Some

9

settlements have involved millions of dollars and thousands of

10

workers; and

11

WHEREAS, Labor unions, supported by the National Labor

12

Relations Act and the National Labor Relations Board, are as

13

dedicated today in advancing our economy as they were 75 years

14

ago; therefore be it

15

RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize 2010 as a celebration of

16

the 75th anniversary of the National Labor Relations Act and the

17

National Labor Relations Board and the protection of freedoms

18

provided to workers across the county.
