| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Honoring the 100th anniversary of Pittsburgh Public Schools in |
2 | the City of Pittsburgh. |
3 | WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Public Schools was founded in 1911, |
4 | bringing 61 separate and independent school districts under the |
5 | direction of one newly appointed 15-member board to better serve |
6 | the City of Pittsburgh's children and families; and |
7 | WHEREAS, During the 2011-2012 school year, Pittsburgh Public |
8 | Schools celebrates its 100th anniversary; and |
9 | WHEREAS, More than 26,000 students are educated in grades |
10 | Pre-K through 12, and more than 5,500 individuals are employed; |
11 | and |
12 | WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Public Schools achieved Adequate Yearly |
13 | Progress as a school district for the second time in three years |
14 | in 2011; and |
15 | WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Public Schools was ranked 7th in the |
16 | nation among public school systems in large United States cities |
17 | in the GreatSchools Best Cities to Live and Learn 2010 report; |

2 | WHEREAS, In 2009, Pittsburgh Public Schools was awarded $80 |
3 | million in competitive grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates |
4 | Foundation and the Federal Department of Education's Teacher |
5 | Incentive Fund program to support its Empowering Effective |
6 | Teachers plan; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Public Schools is taking giant steps |
8 | forward to assure that there is an effective teacher in every |
9 | classroom, every day; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Public Schools believes that through its |
11 | Empowering Effective Teachers work, more than 80% of its |
12 | students will complete a four-year college or work force |
13 | certification; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Public Schools students have access to |
15 | the largest Promise scholarship program in the nation; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Three thousand two hundred Pittsburgh Public Schools |
17 | students have received Pittsburgh PromiseĀ® scholarships to |
18 | attend either a technical/trade school that offers a two-year |
19 | degree and any college or university in this Commonwealth, |
20 | regardless of income; and |
21 | WHEREAS, More than 600 of Pittsburgh Public Schools students |
22 | will be in the inaugural class of Pittsburgh Promise scholars |
23 | that will graduate from a four-year college or two-year work |
24 | force certification program during the 2011-2012 school year; |
25 | and |
26 | WHEREAS, Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent, Dr. Linda |
27 | S. Lane is leading the way to build a sustainable district to |
28 | ensure that City of Pittsburgh children can continue to be |
29 | prepared to achieve academic excellence and strength of |
30 | character so they have the opportunity to excel in all aspects |

2 | RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the 100th anniversary of |
3 | Pittsburgh Public Schools; and be it further |
4 | RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to |
5 | Pittsburgh Public Schools 341 South Bellefield Ave., Pittsburgh |
6 | PA 15213. |
